In 1516, the Senate of the Republic of Venice passed a law obliging all Jews of the city to settle on an island east of San Girolamo. At the two bridges, which connected the island with the rest of the city, gates were attached and at night guards posted. "The ghetto walls, a concrete, physical barrier, suddenly became a powerful and penetrating sign," a booklet from the Museo ebraico summarizes the effect of the edict of 1516.

In order to create more apartments on the island of the ghetto, the buildings were raised to eight floors. In 1541, the area of the ghetto was extended and the streets of the so-called Ghetto Vecchio ("Old Ghetto") added to the west; In 1633, the ghetto Novissimo ("Newest Ghetto") was added, a small area east of Ghetto Nuovo, only two streets wide.

In the southern part of the large square in the center of the historic ghetto, at the Campo del Ghetto Nuovo, there is now the Jewish Museum, which is open every day except on the Sabbath and on Jewish holidays . In addition to a permanent exhibition, the museum also offers guided tours of the historic ghetto and two of the five neighboring synagogues. The reliefs of the Lithuanian sculptor Arbit Blatas on the Campo del Ghetto Nuovo are reminiscent of the Venetian Jews deported and murdered under German occupation from 1943 onwards.

Historic and well-kept area. The neighborhood is very characteristic. Inside there is also a characteristic Jewish restaurant. It does not forget also the presence of the synagogue and the Israeli retirement home.

          The Jewish Ghetto

The center of the Jewish Quarter is in the Campo Ghetto. The first Jews settled here at the beginning of the 11th century, and their number continued to grow over the years. A decree of the Republic of Venice of March 29, 1516 stipulated that the Jewish population had to live in a demarcated area of Venice. For this, the area of the foundries was chosen, called "geti" in Venetian dialect. The Jewish Quarter was locked up at night while Christian guards monitored curfew compliance.
This is how the first ghetto in Europe came into being with Jewish schools, shops and kosher restaurants as well as synagogues, three of which are open to the public. The Jewish quarter has retained its typical character to this day and you can find typical Jewish articles in the shops.

The Venice Ghetto is an island in the Sestiere Cannaregio. From the 16th century until its abolition in 1796 under Napoleon, it was the closed residential area for the Jewish population in Venice. The island is thus the namesake of all ghettos of this era. In later centuries, the term was also transferred to other institutions.

Until the end of the republic in 1797, the Jews of Venice lived in cramped conditions, separated from the rest of the population, but at the same time enjoyed protection from the republic. Like everywhere else in Christian Europe, they were heavily taxed, but in Venice they were also protected from the Inquisition and the reprisals that occurred again and again in the lagoon city. Attacks by Christians against Jews were punished. The officials responsible in the cities of Terra ferma, as the Venice territories on the Italian mainland that followed were called, were punished for tolerating attacks on Jewish residents and not sanctioning them on their own initiative. From the 16th century to the beginning of the 19th century, Venice's Jews enjoyed legal security that was unique in Europe. The Serenissima and its population did not take part in pogroms against their Jewish population.

Historical place, and also plays an important role in Jewish history. A few of the oldest codices are stored here. You can book a guided tour through the Jewish Ghetto of Venice.

Interesting district. Although the Jewish ghetto was founded in the 16th century, to this day the majority of Jews live here and the shops here are also predominantly Jewish.

In Venice, the ghetto is not the most well-known or popular tourist destination like Piazza San Marco or the Rialto Bridge, but it has its own charm. Since the 16th century, this neighborhood was reserved for the Jews who populated various areas of Venice, in particular the Giudecca (which took its name from them). Originally, there were foundries here called "getto" in Venetian; this became the name of the neighborhood, later known as "ghetto" in all other languages, to designate an area in which the Jews were forced to live separately from the other inhabitants and almost as recluses; they could only leave during the day to run errands and go to work; but at sunset the entrance doors to the ghetto were barred from the outside until the following morning.
The ghetto, divided into Old and New, was organized internally as a true self-sufficient neighborhood and was equipped with various Schools or synagogues (one for each of the different groups of origin) among the most beautiful in Europe thanks to the richness of their interiors.
Of the five existing synagogues, some have been converted into museums, while the Scola Levantina and the Scola Ponentina remain open for worship.

You can find them on Calle Gheto novissimo to commemorate people of the Jewish faith who were deported in 1943/44.

Anyone interested in the history of discrimination against Jews in Venice should read Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice" (was also made into a film).

The oldest “ghetto” in the world is also located in Venice’s Cannaregio district. An inconspicuous and somewhat crooked passage led us in there. Behind it there is/was a separate closed world. From here, the term “ghetto” for a forced residential area for Jews quickly spread throughout Europe. There used to be cannon foundries here and the flow of molten metal was called “ghetto” or “ghetto”. In the evening the “ghetto,” which stretched across two islands, was cordoned off, no Jew was allowed out, and the “ghetto” was not reopened until the next morning.

The Venetian Ghetto was founded in 1516 by the Republic of Venice and is considered the world's first ghetto, which is why the term "ghetto" itself comes from the Venetian dialect. The area was originally reserved for the Jewish population to separate them from the rest of the city's population. It is located in the Cannaregio district, on the site of a former foundry (Venetian "geti"), from which the name "ghetto" is derived. Life in the ghetto was characterized by strict restrictions: Jews had to leave the district at nightfall, and the gates were locked at night. Despite these restrictions, the Jewish community developed a rich culture and many traditions within the ghetto. The ghetto was divided into several areas, including the Ghetto Nuovo and the Ghetto Vecchio. The abolition of the ghetto system took place under Napoleon in 1796, paving the way for greater integration of the Jewish community in Venice.
