At that time, the old red brick pavement from the 13th century was replaced by the gray trachyte with the distinctive pattern of white marble that is visible today.

I can only comment on the inclement weather we encountered that day of our visit, where people took refuge in the arcades surrounding the square. There was no water on the ground, although the authorities had prepared elevated walkways in case they were needed, but many tourists still climbed to the top of the impressive religious temple.
