      Short description - Traumschleife Heimat

An eventful hiking trail that opens up the charming lower Simmerbachtal and is connected in the middle with the Soonwaldsteig. On the Soonwald ridge around the Koppenstein, expressive rock formations and unforgettable views over the Hunsrück plateaus determine the character of the path. Two former castles (Gemünden Castle / Koppenstein Castle ruins) and the film theme HEIMAT determine this hike. Highlights: The Koppenstein observation tower, the HEIMAT filming location Gehlweiler, the town of Gemünden with its castle and historic town center as well as the wonderful steep passage from the Koppenstein down into the Simmerbachtal. You should have a certain basic level of fitness, since from the starting point in Gemünden to the Koppenstein ruins you have to climb about 300 meters in altitude. But you will be rewarded with a wonderful 360 degree panoramic view over the Hunsrück plateaus. The descent through an imposing block heap field below the Koppenstein to the lookout pulpit conveys an alpine character. Source: Text information board

Anyone who has seen "Heimat" by Edgar Reitz (or at least the first season), a visit to "Schabbach" is an absolute MUST.
Just a shame, Maria is no longer there ...

Of course, it doesn't look like it did when the series 'Heimat' was made. If you look at the buildings - there are before and after signs - then the shoot has paid off for the residents. Everything nicely renovated / restored.

                    The other HEIMAT part- 1

The location of the new Edgar Reitz film "The Other Home" - filmmaker Reitz took Hunsrückdorf Gehlweiler back 150 years. "

Director Edgar Reitz wrote film history with his HEIMAT trilogy. The new film "The Other Home" puts the Hunsrück village of Gehlweiler at the center of the action. The town center was no longer recognizable from April to September 2012, because filmmaker Edgar Reitz shot his new film “The Other Home” there. In August 2013, large photos were attached to the houses and everyone could see the film sets in pictures. A gem that has been preserved is the setting for the kitchen scenes that take place in the Hauptstr. 43 were shot in Gehlweiler. The owner of the house enthusiastically shows visitors the backdrop from the century before last. With attention to detail, he has compiled many props that can be admired at the location where the film was made. That the owner has many exciting stories to tell about the film and the shooting. It is an experience that cannot be found anywhere else. Source: Text gemuenden.de/index.php/die-andere-heimat.html

                      The other HEIMAT part- 2

The location of the new Edgar Reitz film "The Other Home" - filmmaker Reitz took Hunsrückdorf Gehlweiler back 150 years.

In his new film “The Other Homeland” Reitz describes the fate of Hunsrück emigrants to Brazil. The story takes place in the years 1840 to 1843, i.e. before the previous films. Harvest failures, famines and the arbitrariness of the authorities caused endless hardship. For thousands, emigration to Brazil was the only way to escape the misery. The focus of the three-hour film is the story of two brothers from the Hunsrück who emigrate to Brazil because of the ongoing famine. In his story, as in “Heimat”, the film director focuses on the Simon family of smiths from Schabbach - but 150 years earlier. The pivotal point is the historic forge in Gehlweiler, which was already seen in the first film adaptation of the homeland. As one is used to from Reitz, the film tells a ramified story in many pictures and in different venues. The aim is to create a comprehensive and true-to-original image of that time. For this, the town center of Gehlweiler had to be completely turned inside out. Several decorative buildings with farms, the school, an inn, the church, the cemetery and the backes were built around the historic forge. The modern road surface was optically transformed into a clay and cobblestone street. In many interior rooms, too, the time was turned back with open fireplaces, handmade furniture, long-forgotten tools and devices. At the beginning of 2013, large photos were attached to the houses and everyone can view the film sets in pictures ". Source: Text gemuenden.de/index.php/die-andere-heimat.html

                          Gehlweiler became Schabbach

A cultural highlight of the tour is the village of Gehlweiler. Here Edgar Reitz shot a film related to the Heimat trilogy under the title "The Other Homeland - Chronicle of Desire" in 2012. It deals with the emigration of many Hunsrückers to Brazil in the middle of the 19th century. The story revolves again around the Simon family, but this time in 1840. The village of Gehlweiler was set back as the main location with elaborate backdrops in the 19th century. On the houses in front of which the film was shot, there are now large picture panels showing film scenes. Reitz already shot the famous "Heimat" film trilogy in Gehlweiler. In this epic he describes the fate of a family from the fictional Hunsrück village Schabbach and spanned an arc from 1919 to the turn of the millennium. The main locations were the Henninger family's old forge and the Daemgen family's small “Heimat Museum”.

You simply have to take your time. In the square in front of the community center, there's a rotunda where you can recreate the film set of "The Other Homeland." Numerous information boards throughout the village provide information about the 2012 film project and the preparation required for filming, as well as the consequences it had for life in the village. Be sure to take a stroll through the village streets, look at the pictures on the houses, and immerse yourself in that time – I definitely have to watch this film series again.
