Dream loop home

The Traumschleife Heimat was certified as a premium hiking trail with 85 adventure points by the German Hiking Institute in 2016 and was ranked 2nd in Germany's most beautiful hiking trails in 2020.

An eventful hiking trail that opens up the charming lower Simmerbachtal and is connected in the middle with the Soonwaldsteig. On the Soonwald ridge around the Koppenstein, expressive rock formations and unforgettable views over the Hunsrück plateaus determine the character of the path. Two former castles (Gemünden Castle / Koppenstein Castle ruins) and the film theme HEIMAT determine this hike. Highlights: The Koppenstein observation tower, the HEIMAT filming location Gehlweiler, the town of Gemünden with its castle and historic town center as well as the wonderful steep passage from the Koppenstein down into the Simmerbachtal. You should have a certain basic level of fitness, since from the starting point in Gemünden to the Koppenstein ruins you have to climb about 300 meters in altitude. But you will be rewarded with a wonderful 360 degree panoramic view over the Hunsrück plateaus. Die Geschichte von Gehlweiler

"Gehlweilers Geschichte geht zurück bis in 9./10. Jahrhundert (erste beschreibende Erwähnung im ‚Sobernheimer Landkapitel‘ in ‚Urkunden zur Willigskirche bei Auen‘) und ist eng verbunden mit der früheren Burg Koppenstein. Diese war im Besitz der früher starken Familiendynastie der Sponheimer und Gehlweiler gehörte als Vorort zum ‚Koppenstein‘. Das kleine Hunsrückörtchen war somit selber sponheimisch und tauchte 1317 unter dem Namen ‚Gelwilre‘ erstmals namentlich in einer Urkunde auf. Gehlweiler wurde bis 1575 zum Kirchspiel Getzbach (dem heutigen Seesbach) zugerechnet und gehörte seit diesem Zeitpunkt zum Amtsbereich Gemünden. 1707 ging Gehlweiler in badischen Besitz über, was allerdings keine größeren Veränderungen für das Leben der Bürger verursachte. Seit 1970 liegt die Ortsgemeinde Gehlweiler nun im Zuständigkeitsbereich der Verbandsgemeinde Kirchberg, die im Zuge der damailigen Verwaltungsreform als Zusammenschluss von 40 Ortsgemeinden aus Gebietsteilen der früheren Ämter Büchenbeuren, Gemünden und Kirchberg, der Zuordnung von zwei Ortsgemeinden aus dem Amt Rhaunen sowie einer Eingliederung der vormals verbandsfreien Stadt Kirchberg entstand. Im 17. Jahrhundert besaß Gehlweiler eine eigene Kapelle, die gegenüber der neuen Schule stand und heute nicht mehr vorhanden ist Das Haus Hauptstraße 16 war das ehemalige Zehnthaus des Ortes. Dörfliche Besonderheiten sind das ehemalige Gemeindebackhaus mit seinem herrlichen Fachwerk und einem Glockenreiter aus dem 18. Jahrhundert sowie die die dreibogige Quader- und Bruchsteinbrücke aus dem 18./19. Jahrhundert mit Schiefer-Flügelmauern, die im Laufe der Jahre desöfteren restauriert wurde. In der „Alten Schmiede“ und dem dazugehörigen Wohnhaus, das sich heute in Privatbesitz befindet wurden Teile des Films „Heimat“ von Edgar Reitz gedreht, die den Hunsrück weit über seine Landesgrenzen hinaus bekannt gemacht haben. In his new film “The Other Homeland” Reitz describes the fate of Hunsrück emigrants to Brazil. The story takes place in the years 1840 to 1843, i.e. before the previous films. The focus of the three-hour film is the story of two brothers from the Hunsrück who emigrate to Brazil because of the ongoing famine. In his story, as in “Heimat”, the film director focuses on the Simon family of smiths from Schabbach - but 150 years earlier. The pivotal point is the historic forge in Gehlweiler, which was already seen in the first film adaptation of the homeland. As one is used to from Reitz, the film tells a ramified story in many pictures and in different venues. The aim is to create a comprehensive and true-to-original image of that time. For this, the town center of Gehlweiler had to be completely turned inside out. Several decorative buildings with farms, the school, an inn, the church, the cemetery and the backes were built around the historic forge. The modern road surface was optically transformed into a clay and cobblestone street. In many interior rooms, too, the time was turned back with open fireplaces, handmade furniture, long-forgotten tools and devices. Gehlweiler became Schabbach

Be sure to take a stroll through the village streets, look at the pictures on the houses, and immerse yourself in that time – I definitely have to watch this film series again.
