Camping within the foundations of a castle ruin? It's possible! And here at Schmidtburg. You can set up camp for the night at the official trekking site and feel like a knight.

The trekking site is on the Soonwaldsteig, but is not operated by the Soonwald-Nahe Nature Park. You can request a reservation from the Schneppenbach local authority at schneppenbach@gmx.de.

A night in this unique location costs 10 euros per tent, 15 euros at the group campsite. You bring your own water, there is a toilet on site.

The Schmidtburg castle ruins are not only an impressive medieval building, but also an official campsite on the Soonwaldsteig trail. As the sun sets in the evening, you can choose a spot between the walls—provided you've registered in advance. This beautifully preserved castle ruin is definitely worth the short detour from Soonwaldsteig. The absolute highlight is an overnight stay in a tent on the ruins. In our case total peace and a very special feeling as "lord of the castle for one night" :)

Really beautifull. I ran the Soonwaldsteig and camped at Schmidtburg for a small fee. The Burgvogt, Mr. Gerlach, is a lovable elderly gentleman who regularly looks after the right. I was pleased to meet him and chat with him a bit and could even buy him a Kirner ... (🤫, he can not bring much here 😉)
