The name Dutzendteich does not come from formerly existing there twelve ponds (there were only eight). Some sources say that the term Dutzendteich derives from the Old German name Doutze for reed. Other sources, such as the "Pfinzing Atlas" of 1594, call the term Tutschetey, which means muddy terrain. Today, next to the large dozen pond (previously often also "Dutzenteich" written) the small Dutzendteich, the Flachweiher and other, smaller ponds, which are referred to as "number pond". A popular excursion destination, just as it is today, the dozen pond. Probably built as a water reservoir in the 14th century, it has been used by the townspeople to relax since the 19th century. The name probably derives from "Dutze", a medieval word for reed. The leisure facilities such as a bathing facility and a lighthouse built in 1906 were demolished for the construction of the congress hall and the Nazi Party Rally Grounds, and from 1945 the City of Nuremberg restored the site's function as a recreation area.

Today's public park with its idyllic ponds and extensive green spaces has been a popular destination since the 16th century. However, the lake Dutzendteich, which was created around 1430 by damming small streams, no longer exists. As it was located in the middle of the Nazi Party Rally Grounds, it was reduced in size considerably during the Nazi era, and the granite-paved parade route has since divided it into the large and small Dutzendteich.
