The Schmausenbuck is an elevation right next to the Nuremberg Zoo, in the middle of the beautiful Reichswald. For a beautiful view high above the treetops, you can climb the historic observation tower. The Reichswaldfest takes place here every year.

The Schmausenbuck is one of the oldest documented forest recreation and entertainment sites in the history of the fort. Celebrations are still going on here today. The Reichswaldfest takes place here every summer.

In 1831 Albert Johann Cramer, the father of Theodor von Cramer-Klett, bought the Schmausenschloss and the Schmausenbuck. He had the area transformed into a romantic amusement park with castle ruins and a hermitage. The closed park was only opened to the public on a few days a year.

A restaurant was built on the west side as early as the 18th century. The owner Fikenscher had the old inn expanded from 1877 to 1881 with a modern restaurant and hotel building and a large orchestra hall building and operated the facility as a summer resort and spa and entertainment place. In 1881, the Beautification Association for the Schmausenbuck was founded, which had paths and bridges created and the 41 meter high Schmausenbuck Tower built on the Gritz.

Construction of the observation tower began on May 5, 1887. It replaced the so-called ladder to heaven, a pyramid-shaped wooden structure made of tree trunks. The stone tower with a high, pointed tin roof was opened on May 8, 1888. It was damaged by Allied shelling in 1945 and was only rebuilt in its current form in 1965 with a height of 29 meters. The listed observation tower with its viewing platform at 413.87 m above sea level. NN is open annually from May to September on Sundays and public holidays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The amateur radio relay DB0VN (438.650 MHz) has been located on the Schmausenbuckturm since 1974.
