Built in 1899, the Cortalets refuge is one of the oldest in the Pyrenees. It is located on the GR 10 and HRP (Haute Route Pyrénéenne) trails at the foot of Canigou at an altitude of 2,150 meters. During guarding periods, the refuge has 105 beds compared to 19 outside guarding.

This church, the Abbey de Saint-Michel de Cuxa, was dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The name (coming from Hebrew) means "Who is like God?". He is often depicted - on paintings or as a statue - with a flaming sword, and occasionally a lance. Michael is - together with Raphael, Gabriel and Uriel - one of the four archangels who (according to human imagination) occupy the highest rank in the heavenly hierarchy of angelic beings. Their common feast day in the saints calendar is September 29th.

Good food and hospitality! Nice spot to start a hike around or to the summit of Canigou. You can find the remains of a helicopter near the Refuge.

Friendly hut with room for over 80 hikers and a small restaurant. In good weather view to Perpignan and Mediterranean (sunrise!). Usually you reserve beforehand with dinner and breakfast. Also small dorms for four people available. Good starting point for the climb to the Pic du Canigou (about 2 hours, 600 Hhm), preferably start early in the morning before the jeep walkers populate the route from about 10 clock ...
