The Great Ratzeburg Lake then extends north to Rothenhusen. Since the dams have passable passages, it is possible to navigate all four parts of the Ratzeburg Lake with suitable (not too high) boats.

The Domsee lies north of the Königsdamm and, with a northwesterly bend, merges into the Großer Ratzeburger See (Great Ratzeburg Lake); it is not separated from the lake by a dam, but by a somewhat narrower passage between the Dom peninsula and the lakeshore near Römnitz, the so-called "Römnitzer Enge" (Römnitz Narrows).

the Kleiner Küchensee (somewhat more melodiously referred to as the “Stadtsee” by the town of Ratzeburg, but often called the “Spittoon” by locals due to its manageable size) lies between the two eastern dams Königsdamm (in the north) and Kleinbahndamm (in the south);

These three dams divided Lake Ratzeburg into the following individual lakes: The Great Kitchen Lake lies south of Lüneburger Damm, Insel, and Kleinbahndamm and extends to Farchau;

In 1894, another dam was built between the island and the eastern shore, namely the "Kleinbahndamm" (small railway dam), built for the Ratzeburg narrow-gauge railway, which lies a little south of the "Königsdamm" and provides a connection to Ziethen and Mustin; however, there has been no rail traffic on this dam since 1934.

From 1842 to 1847, the island was connected to the surrounding area on the eastern side by the construction of the “Königsdamm”, which was officially given this name in 1854 in the presence and in honor of the Danish King Frederick VII in Ratzeburg;

The oldest historical connection between the island town and the surrounding area was the “Lüneburger Damm” in the west, which connected Ratzeburg with the “Old Salt Road” as an important trade route;

The northeastern shore borders Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (the municipality of Utecht) in the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve. The western shore is home to the municipalities of Groß Sarau, Pogeez, and Buchholz. Together with the Küchensee, it encloses the island town of Ratzeburg. The division of the lake area into the Großer Ratzeburger See, the Domsee, and the Großer and Kleiner Küchensee occurred when dams were built between the lakeshore and the Dominsel.
