8월 4, 2025, German cemetery of Montaigu
After the Volksbund took over, development work began in 1933, such as the planting of birch trees that give this cemetery a particular charm or the construction of a memorial site (Gedenkhalle) in pink Vosges sandstone based on the plans of the Volksbund's chief architect, Robert Tischler. Inside this building, which is located at the back of the necropolis and after taking a staircase, one reaches a cloister from which one accesses a crypt in which the names of all the men buried in this cemetery are engraved on large beech wood panels.

8월 4, 2025, German cemetery of Montaigu
This cemetery, located in a town occupied by the Germans from September 1914 to October 1918, was created near a field hospital. From 1920 onwards, it served as a nucleus for the grouping of German graves located in around sixty communes, in particular those in the cemeteries created by the Germans during the war in the communes they occupied, such as Mauregny-en-Haye (more than 1,000 graves), Coucy-les-Eppes (more than 500) and Berrieux (600). The men buried here all fought east of the Chemin des Dames, mainly in the autumn of 1914, early 1915, in April and May 1917 (during General Nivelle's offensive), at the end of May 1918 and from September to October of that same year. Today, this necropolis houses 7,192 bodies: 5,402 are buried in individual and collective graves (of which 8 combatants could not be identified) and 1,790 rest in an ossuary (of which only 54 could be identified).

The church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste is listed as a historical monument: nave from the twelfth century, square tower of the crossing from the thirteenth century, traces of fortifications on the walls of the transept and on the bell tower from the fifteenth century. The rose window was influenced by that of the cathedral Notre-Dame de Laon.

Vorges is a small village located approximately 6 km south of Laon, in the Hauts-de-France region. The village has a rich history dating back to Roman times, when it was part of the territory of the Rèmois, a Gallic tribe. In the 5th century, the Germanic and Frankish people settled in the area, which led to the further development of the village. During the early Middle Ages, under the rule of Clovis and the influence of Bishop Saint Rémy, Christian influence began to grow in Vorges. Archaeological excavations have uncovered Merovingian tombs, which contain some of the first Christian cemeteries in the region. In the 12th century, Vorges was mentioned in several historical documents and had a thriving wine-growing sector with 512 vineyards owned by various abbeys. The village also has a fortified church, built between 1180 and 1230, which was reinforced during the Hundred Years' War to withstand attacks from the English and Burgundians.

You can admire the beautiful architecture, the statue of the Black Madonna, the frescoes and relics of the basilica, and learn about its rich history and culture. The basilica is located in the town of Liesse-Notre-Dame.

8월 29, 2023, Pierrepont Village
The village of Pierrepont already stands out - even on comments on the Internet - for the presence of a bakery and a bar. This compared to the other villages in the region that only house a church and a municipal school. We also noticed two beautiful scenes in the form of a mailbox incorporated in a bicycle and a fisherman on the other. The cross next to the Visser is also listed as a monument on Wikipedia.

Here, the city walker will find an early masterpiece of Gothic architecture, a style often found in this part of France – Chartres and Reims, for example, attract enthusiastic international visitors and are far more famous than Laon. In the following 13th century, many Gothic churches were built, not only in their country of origin, France, but also beyond the country's borders, where this sky-high, light-filled architectural style was now in great demand for new churches (for example, the laying of the foundation stone for Cologne Cathedral in 1248).

The cathedral stands in the old town of Laon on Table Mountain and can be seen from afar. The detailed front and the balanced proportions make the building worth seeing from the outside. But you should definitely take your time and look inside one of the earliest Gothic masterpieces. The feeling of space in the light-flooded church is amazing. There are many side chapels, beautiful stained glass windows, remains of the interior painting and much more to admire. We were thrilled!

The cathedral was built on the site of previous churches, including a Carolingian church that was consecrated in the presence of Emperor Charlemagne in 800, and a Romanesque church. The current building is one of the oldest Gothic structures in the country; only the cathedrals of Saint-Denis and Noyon are older. Notre-Dame of Paris is slightly younger. The cathedral was built between 1155 and 1235. In the 14th century, 27 chapels were added between the buttresses; in the 16th and 17th centuries they were more separated by walls. In the same century, the facade of the southern arm of the transept was also modified by adding two portals with frontals and a high window.[1] In 1772 the central portal was raised to allow for larger processional canopies. A major restoration was started in 1853; the work lasted until 1914, partly due to damage from an explosion in 1870. The portals of the west facade The church has three facades with portals, not only a monumental west facade as usual, but also facades on the north and south sides. One of the original seven towers was also demolished during the French Revolution. Another tower was lost in a lightning strike in the 18th century. Two remain on the front facade, one each at the side walls and a fifth at the intersection of nave and transept. The highest is the southern Tour de l'Horloge (60.5 m). With its large number of towers, the cathedral is still in the Romanesque tradition (compare Tournai). The early Gothic cathedral of Laon probably had a major influence on the development of Gothic architecture in France and beyond
