The Seifersdorf Valley is a picturesque landscape conservation area in Saxony, located about 20 kilometers northeast of Dresden. It stretches along the Roter Graben stream between the towns of Seifersdorf and Liegau-Augustusbad (now districts of Wachau and Radeberg, respectively). The valley is best known for its romantic park, which was designed in the 18th century under the direction of Christina von Brühl, the wife of the Saxon minister Heinrich von Brühl. ### Features of the Seifersdorf Valley: - **Landscape**: The valley is characterized by rolling hills, wooded slopes, and a babbling brook. It offers a diverse range of flora and fauna and is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers. - **Cultural Significance**: In the spirit of Sensibility and early Romanticism, the Seifersdorf Valley was laid out as a *Sentimental Landscape Garden*. It is one of the earliest examples of such a landscape garden in Germany. - **Art and Monuments**: The valley is home to numerous memorial stones, inscriptions, small temples, and ruins depicting literary, philosophical, and friendship-related themes. Many of these monuments are dedicated to famous figures of the 18th century, such as Friedrich Schiller, Johann Joachim Winckelmann, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. - **Significance for Romanticism**: The valley served as a meeting place for poets, thinkers, and artists of the time. The idea of the landscape garden as an emotional retreat was particularly impressively realized here. Today, the Seifersdorf Valley is a protected natural and cultural heritage site. It invites visitors to take walks, hikes, and quietly contemplate its historical and natural beauty.

"'Ach wie schön' is an inscription in a sandstone monument embedded in a fieldstone wall on the slope of the Rödertal valley. A second carved sandstone monument bears the inscription 'Für Johanna und Moritz 1820'. This monument refers to the view from this vantage point. The 'Ach wie schön' monument was destroyed by the tornado on Whit Monday 2010 and restored in July 2011." Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seifersdorfer_Tal#Ach_wie_sch%C3%B6n

"When the young wife of Count Carl von Brühl (Tina's son, forester, and general manager), Jenny von Pourtalès from Neuchâtel, was led into the valley for the first time by her husband in 1814, she is said to have exclaimed 'Ah, how beautiful!' at this very spot. A sandstone plaque bears the dedication: 'For Johanna and Moritz 1820.' Moritz was the couple's four-year-old son at the time. Eight years later, this eldest son died of scarlet fever in Seifersdorf. To the left and right of the monument are large hazelnut bushes that frame this garden scene." Source: https://tinathal.de/ach-wie-schoen-2/

A lonely witness to the valley's former splendor. The associated "temple" has unfortunately long since vanished :-(

The Seiferdorf valley is both a landscape conservation area and one of the oldest German landscape gardens. At the end of the 18th century, Christina von Brühl designed and created the Seiferdorf Valley. Here at the entrance to the Seiferdorf valley is the altar of virtue, which forms an ensemble with the temple in memory of good people. The temple no longer exists, but you can still admire the altar from all sides.
