In the foam lava pit of Herchenberg GmbH, tuff and slag are mined that the former volcano spewed out about 500,000 and about 210,000 years ago.

Foam lava is a porous lava, also known as lava gravel or lava scoria. In Germany it is only mined in the Eifel. Larger European deposits of lava gravel are located in the Auvergne in France.

It looks quite impressive when you look down into the crater from above.
