Long before the discovery of electricity and the inventions associated with it, our ancestors discovered the possibility of harnessing the power of the elements for various purposes - which were useful on the one hand, but could also be a threat as a force of nature on the other. Rochereau Lake, with an area of 125 hectares, is the largest drinking water reserve in the Grand Lay Valley, fed by the Le Maine River. It has good fishing conditions and is home to a rich fish diversity in white fish, predatory fish and common and mirror carp of intermediate size.

This bridge crosses the stream of the Mother which encircles the city. It offers a beautiful view of the well-preserved fortifications of Vouvant. Looking north, you can see the Mélusine tower. It is in fact the keep, the only part of the old castle that still remains.

Vouvant is labelled in Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (since 1988), as a Petite cité de caractère, and the village has obtained two flowers out of five in the Concours des villes et villages fleuris. It is the only fortified village of Vendée, is rich in cultural and architectural heritage and has a couple of great cafes and pubs to keep you refreshed. There are also some stunning viewpoints down by the river and by the old fort. An absolute MUST to detour here
