The Titus Brandsma Parish was established in 1986 by merging the then-existing six parishes in Leeuwarden, namely: * the Franciscus Parish in Leeuwarden-Oost, which was founded in 1964 * the Johannes de Doper Parish in Leeuwarden-Zuid (Huizum), dating from 1934 * the Paulus Parish (Nijlân) and the Emmaus Parish (Bilgaard), both dating from the 1960s and the two oldest parishes rooted in Leeuwarden's history: * the St. Dominicus Church (traditionally served (until 1992) by Dominican friars, active in Leeuwarden since 1245) * and the St. Boniface Church, which originated from old state churches. Six parishes with very different backgrounds decided to become one parish and chose the name and patronage of Frisian Father Titus Brandsma, who was beatified in 1985. From 1986 to 2004, the parish was divided into quarters around four churches (St. Boniface Church, St. Dominic Church, St. Francis Church, and St. John the Baptist Church). For a time, the Boniface Church served as the city church. From 2004 onward, the parish no longer had quarters and worshipped in two churches, St. Boniface and St. Dominic, which served the entire Catholic faith community in Leeuwarden. The Titus Brandsma House was and still is the parish center, as well as the center for catechesis and spirituality. Unbelievable with the small photos! The Elfstedenmonument Monument It was designed and realized by the artists Maree Blok and Bas Lugthart on the Kanter Landbrücke over the Murk River. This is the last bridge on the Elfstedenroute, which the skaters pass for the last few kilometers to the finish in Leeuwarden. The bridge will be entirely covered with thousands of handmade ceramic tiles, each with blue glazed portraits of skaters who have ever followed the Elfstedentocht. In the last century, 16 Elfstedentochten were held, in which thousands of riders managed to finish the 200 km race. Last bridge before the finish of the triumphal arch Eleven Cities Monument unveiled In the summer of 2001, after several years of preparation, the first part of the Eleven Steden monument was unveiled. Thousands of pictures of Elfstedenriders have been sent for this purpose. Both old photos from the beginning of the last century of skaters who took part in the first tour in 1909, as well as pictures from the last trip in 1997. A total of over 7000 eleven riders have been pictured on the bridge so far. Since the unveiling, many thousands of people from home and abroad have visited the memorial, including Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Maxima.

Titus Brandsma was a Dutch Carmelite priest, professor, and publicist from Friesland. Brandsma specialized in medieval mysticism and was himself a mystic. As a strongly socially engaged priest, he took initiatives in the areas of Catholic emancipation, Catholic education, and journalism. Brandsma opposed Nazism. In 1942, during World War II, he was arrested by the German occupiers. He had spoken out against racial hatred in lectures, among other things, and, at the behest of Johannes de Jong, Archbishop of Utrecht, drew up guidelines requiring Catholic magazines not to publish advertisements for the National Socialist Movement. He was imprisoned in Scheveningen and Camp Amersfoort, and finally deported to Dachau concentration camp. After severe beatings, he was murdered there. Pope John Paul II beatified him as a martyr for the faith in 1985.[1] On May 15, 2022, Brandsma was canonized by Pope Francis.
