Moddergat (Frisian pronunciation: ['modrɡɔt]?) is a village in the municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân in the Dutch province of Friesland. Together with the village of Paesens, the village forms a municipality under the name Paesens-Moddergat. The two villages were initially separated by the waters of the Paesens; originally a sea rift that ended in the Wadden Sea. The village was founded in the 18th century at the mouth of the sea rift, which was quite muddy. Moddergat was mentioned in 1718 as Modde gat. It started as a satellite settlement of the village of Paesens. This had already expanded westwards, and so it was decided to also inhabit the other bank of the rift.
