The name Loenen or Loinen means something like watercourse. The Loenen house is a fairly simple rectangular building with a tower on the entrance side. This entrance side is oriented to the north. A simple staircase with a dozen steps leads to the entrance of the first floor, the main floor of the house. To the left of the stairs is an entrance for suppliers and staff. The rear of the house faces south and is clearly visible from the Waaldijk. Partly on the site of the outbuildings of the current Loenen house, the Loenen castle has stood, presumably since the late Middle Ages. The first castle was probably replaced by a new castle in the fifteenth century. This castle can be seen in the engraving after a drawing by Cornelis Pronk from 1732. It was an impressive castle with heavy walls. Several residential buildings had stepped gables. The tower was topped with an onion surmounted by a spire. The castle was completely moated.
