A special and somewhat hidden place, this place where the Allies experienced their successful battle for Arnhem in 1945. Not without a fight, but a lot more successful than in 1944 with the famous operation market garden. Beautiful monument.

Story Before the construction of the IJssel Bridge, the connection between the banks was ensured by a ferry service, the Katerveer. In 1905 the Commission for Bridging the IJssel was founded near the Katerveer. The mayor of Zwolle I.A. van Roijen submitted several pleas to the Senate. 1000 guilders were raised for a first draft. In 1930 the bridge was finally opened and at the same time the ferry service was stopped. In the early morning of May 10, 1940, the main part of the IJssel Bridge was blown up by the Dutch army to slow the German advance. The steel arch bridge collapsed into the water, but the river piers and bridges were spared. The bridge took almost 3 years to repair. In January 1943, operations were completed “in their original condition”. The wooden deck of the main bridge was replaced with a reinforced concrete deck.
