In past centuries, Weener had a port on the Ems and was located on the left-bank trade route to the Münsterland to the south. The town was known primarily for its cattle and horse markets and exported agricultural goods. Nowadays, the port as a transshipment point and the cattle trade no longer play a role. Economically, Weener is dominated by retail for the Rheiderland region, agriculture and tourism. There are also a few industrial companies in the town.

A small but nevertheless beautiful harbor with some historic ships. A walk along the harbor and the beautiful cobblestone paths is worth it.

The very large dimensions of the bascule bridge is due to the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg. It transfers the huge cruise ships on the Ems from the shipyard in Papenburg to the North Sea. Always a special highlight that attracts a lot of spectators.

An imposing building, I was lucky and could watch the bridge being folded up. Craziness.

The Jann Berghaus Bridge over the Ems in Leer in East Friesland is one of the largest bascule bridges in Central Europe after the Erasmus Bridge. The bridge is 464 meters long, from the west side it is 206 meters and from the east side 204 meters to the hinged part. The approach bridge consists of 24 field bridges. The width between the railings is 12 meters and the width of the roadway is 7 meters. The folding part is 63 meters long in total. When it is open, 45 meters of it are unfolded and 15 meters protrude into the bridge basement. The construction costs at the time were 40,100,000 DM, which corresponds to a square meter price of 7125 DM.

Those who come here by bike should definitely take a look at the harbor and eat delicious fish. It just has to be ;-)
