This boardwalk allows you to walk on top of a vulnerable piece of nature: the marshy chalk grassland behind the Geul where rare plant and animal species are given the chance to survive. Those who prefer an even more beautiful piece of nature simply open the gate here and walk - possibly with some Galloway cattle for company - instead of over the boardwalks on a grass path through an open part of the Ingendael nature reserve to the Geul where a small bridge takes you to a nature path between grassland, river and sloping forest. The history of the church of St. Gerlachus begins shortly after the saint's death, around 1200. A Norbertine monastery was founded on the spot where Gerlachus had lived in Houthem.
