The name 'Zooislagen' can be traced back to the so-called dike breaches, places where water from the Maas came through the dike, creating a 'mess' on the other side. This narrow strip houses two old wheels between the Bossche Sloot and the polder ditch 'Zooislagen en Buitendijkseloop' that flows into the Groenendaalse Wetering north of Haarsteeg along the Engelermeer and the Voordijk. The Sompen en Zooislagen nature reserve is also located there. (Not accessible) 'Sompen' refers to the marshy subsoil, caused by the Maas that used to burst its banks. It is a location with history. Boats used to sail here to a then very lively harbour in Haarsteeg. There was also a fort, as part of the Zuiderwaterlinie to protect nearby Heusden. Beautiful fen with an island and a sandy plain at both ends. Hiking trail runs all the way around it.

This fen is popularly called "The Ice Rink". It was frequently used by locals for skating.

You can go all the way around the fen. Spotting heron and frog. Also place to sit or lie down.

The Engelermeer is a recreational lake and recreation area northwest of 's-Hertogenbosch, in the Dutch province of North Brabant. The lake is named after the town of Engelen, which lies east of the Engelermeer on the Dieze. The largest part of the area, which covers a total of 428 hectares, is managed by the municipality of Den Bosch. It is mainly intended for more intensive recreation. A 58-hectare part on the northeast side of the lake is designated as a nature reserve and falls under the responsibility of Staatsbosbeheer. The Engelermeer has been an official nudist beach since 1993.
