The Heisterburg in the Deister was a rampart castle from the 10th to 11th century near the Lauenau district of Feggendorf. It is located half in the area of the Nenndorf collective municipality and half in the town of Rodenberg in Lower Saxony. The complex is located in a forest area at the northwestern end of the Deister. It is located near the mountain ridge at about 330 meters above sea level in a depression between two flat elevations. The fortification is on the former border between the medieval districts of Bukkigau and Marstemgau. Today it is on the border between the town of Rodenberg and the Bad Nenndorf collective municipality as well as the border of the Hanover region and the Schaumburg district. Apparently the complex was still called Hoyer, Hoysburg or Hoiesburg in the 16th century. Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heisterburg

On the 100th birthday of Kaiser Wilhelm I on March 22, 1897, an imperial oak was also planted in the Fuchsbach valley near Barsinghausen. The local Landwehr warriors' association had a small monument erected at the foot of the oak. The Fuchsbach was dammed here in the 17th century to form a "trout pond" to regulate water in the coal mining industry. On the other bank of the stream from the imperial oak is the mouth of the "Lower Sammann Tunnel" built in 1831. After it was taken over by the Prussian state in 1875, it was only used to ventilate the tunnel system opened up by the Barsinghausen monastery tunnel. When the memorial stone was built in 1897, a small artificial waterfall was also built on the Fuchsbach near the imperial oak. Kaiser Wilhelm Square was a popular excursion destination for Barsinghausen residents around the turn of the century in 1900. In 2022 there will be a shelter as well as benches and seating areas between the Kaisereiche and the trout pond. Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaisereiche_(Barsinghausen)

A shelter and fresh spring water invite you to rest. A memorial stone commemorates the 10th Pioneer Battalion. A water intake point was built in 1937/38. It was named Böss-Quelle, probably after the forester Bössenroth who worked here.

The Heisterburg is located on the Deister ridge on an old border - today between the Hanover region and the Schaumburg district as well as the town of Rodenberg and Bad Nenndorf. It is a rampart castle that dates back to the 10th to 11th centuries. The Heisterburg consists of a smaller main castle and an outer castle that covers a larger area. The castle ramparts are still well preserved. There are no written records of the Heisterbug. Ceramic finds inside the castle point to the 10th century. However, archaeologists have also found evidence of larger stone buildings inside the castle. This speaks against the theory of a refuge castle; an early noble family may have once lived here. Strutzberg Tower, also called Belvedere Tower, probably financed in 1852 by Wilhelm Ludwig August Freiherr von Hanstein-Knorr. Battlemented tower on an octagonal floor plan made of irregular sandstone blocks, with a round-arched entrance door and cross-shaped window openings. Partially destroyed in 1945, rebuilt in 1987 and raised with a steel observation platform.

The spa park is a great place to relax and take a stroll, especially when the weather is nice. There is a lot to discover here: the romantic little castle, beautiful flowerbeds, fountains and the enchanted Süntelbuchenallee. Definitely worth a visit!

The people of Bad Nenndorf have a lot to thank their Landgrave Wilhelm IX of Hesse-Kassel for recognizing the importance of the sulfur water and thus becoming the spa's founder in 1787. He also had a hand in the spa park, as it was his court gardener Georg Wilhelm Homburg from Kassel who began designing the complex in 1792 after two years of study in England. 203 types of trees, 33 different roses and 37 types of shrubs were planted on 35 hectares. And some of them can still be admired today. The spa park in Bad Nenndorf enjoys the status of a cultural monument as a historic green space.
