The Neckermolen or Nekkermolen is a polder mill built around 1631, which was fitted with a screw between 1830 and 1840. The mill is a thatched octagonal mill of the ground-sailer type with an old Dutch sail cross. The cap of the mill is fitted with a cross-piece with wooden rollers, which is seasoned from the inside. The mill, like more North Holland polder mills, is an internal sailer. The Neckermolen is fitted with a Flemish catch. Together with an electric pumping station, the mill drains the Wormer, Jisp and Neck water board. (wikipedia)

The elongated village of Westbeemster (approx. 800 inhabitants) has traditionally formed a Catholic enclave in the predominantly Protestant polder the Beemster. It is not surprising to find a large Catholic church in this village, built in 1879. Next to the church is the monastery of Our Lady of Lourdes, built in 1910 and inhabited by sisters of the Franciscan order until about 1980. The monastery also housed a school. The L-shaped two-storey building contained the sister monastery in the short part (with a monastery chapel on the first floor with a roof turret with a bell), the elongated part housed the school. The building was designed by the architect Simon Bernardus van Sante (1876-1936) in an architectural style that is called transitional architecture. In any case, the architectural style is a stark contrast to the adjacent neo-Gothic church. The former monastery building looks very un-Dutch... like some kind of hunting lodge in a German principality, or something like that. The building is now privately occupied and also houses artists' studios. Nice and striking building in the beautiful polder landscape.

This quiet road along the Purmerringvaart is a wonderfully relaxing place to cycle.

Beautiful thatched historic mill that still serves as a pumping station to maintain the water level in the polders. The mill is clearly visible from both sides of the water. That's good too, because you can't go inside.
