Giethoorn is located in the middle of the Weerribben-Wieden National Park, one of the largest wetlands in the Netherlands, and offers cyclists numerous routes through a breathtaking nature reserve. The paths lead you along quiet canals, vast reed fields and marshes, where you can admire the local flora and fauna, including water birds and perhaps even a curious heron.

In Giethoorn, watermills play an important role in the historical landscape. These mills were originally used for grinding grain and draining the marshes to make the land suitable for agriculture.

The Mennonite community in Giethoorn is one of the oldest in the country. Between 1563 and 1565, Leenaert Bouwens visited this community and baptized five people. The church was built in 1871 in the “Water State style.” The flat-roofed interior still has some important furniture: (Kerkeraad) benches, neo-Gothic style oak pulpit with half-Louis XV balusters and the 1911 organ on the balcony. It is also worth knowing that the first Sunday school for Anabaptists was opened there in 1895. The church is located in the heart of the “Dutch Venice” and is definitely worth a visit due to its surroundings. Many people come to Giethoorn. Unfortunately, they couldn't look inside the church because the door was closed. The idea in 2019 was to open the church more often. In this way, the Mennonite community of Giethoorn would like to establish a new connection to the village, its residents and visitors.
