The Haringvliet is a former estuary of the North Sea, in South Holland between Voorne-Putten and the Hoeksche Waard in the north, and Goeree-Overflakkee in the south. In 1970, the Haringvliet was closed off from the sea by the Haringvlietdam as part of the Delta Works and the Goereese sluis was built for shipping at the dam. The Haringvlietbrug runs from the Hoeksche Waard to the Hellegatsplein. The island of Tiengemeten is located in the Haringvliet. The Spui flows into it between the Hoeksche Waard and Voorne-Putten.

Originally it was a natural harbour, created from a creek. Farmers settled along the banks of that creek at the end of the 12th century, which marks the beginning of Spijkenisse. This creek served as a harbour for centuries. Now part of it has been filled in and another part has been closed off.
