The Rusthoff country estate was founded in 1791 by the wealthy Jean Adam Charbon, a textile merchant from Amsterdam. The country estate was located in the middle of the current village of Sassenheim, with the house, garden and park on the Hoofdstraat. Initially it was only a summer residence; later the Charbon family lived there permanently. Between 1830 and 1850 the park was laid out in landscape style by J.D. Zocher jr., the most famous architect of the Zocher family. The paths and the pond have undulating lines and romantic vistas.

Beautiful path but we were glad that it had not rained for a while. Even now it was still swampy in some parts but we happily trudged through it. Woe O' Woe if it has rained a lot. Make sure you have good boots if you want to walk here.

Unfortunately, the drawbridge was recently seriously damaged by vandals. The damage is so serious that it must be repaired by specialists. We are now waiting for financing because the insurance does not cover the destruction. Until then, the bridge will remain open and is therefore not accessible (November 2024).
