Built between 1200 and 1240, the exact date of construction of this Romanesque fieldstone church on a cruciform floor plan is unknown – Ice Age boulders were used locally. St. Crucis features Gothic-style alterations, including the choir apse in the east and the organ loft. Bricks were used for the first time during these construction projects, and these bricks were subsequently used extensively in the Margraviate of Brandenburg during the so-called Brick Gothic period.

Despite the Slavic name, the town of Ziesar is a newly founded German town (albeit close to a Slavic hill fort). This becomes clear from the grid-like layout of the town and the layout of the town church of St. Crucis, both of which show the characteristics of the German state development in terra slavica. After the Reformation, monastic and nunnery orders were dissolved and most monastic buildings disappeared.
