The Holy Cross Church was built between 1200 and 1240 as a classic cross church. The exact date of origin of the church building, which was probably built by monks of the Premonstratensian order, is unknown. St. Crucis was built from the building materials available locally, Ice Age boulders (boulders). In 1226 Franciscans settled in Ziesar. In 1237 a monastery was founded, St. Crucis to the monastery church. Around 1250, however, the Franciscans went from Ziesar to the Johanniskirche in the old town of Brandenburg.

As early as 1226, the year Francis of Assisi died, brothers of the Franciscan order founded in 1210 have been documented in the town of Ziesar, a residence of the Bishop of Brandenburg. The Franciscan monastery only existed for a few decades because there had been military unrest in Ziesar. As early as 1250 – 1237 at the earliest, 1258 at the latest – the mendicant monks moved to the much larger old town of Brandenburg.
During his tenure from 1327 to 1347, Brandenburg Bishop Ludwig Schenk von Neindorf made Ziesar Castle his permanent residence and administrative center. During his tenure there was evidence of Cistercians in the city from 1331 at the latest. In 1341 the bishop founded a monastery for the Cistercians. Around 1540 the nunnery was dissolved as a result of the Reformation and initially continued as a women's monastery. The former nuns were guaranteed a lifelong right of residence. In 1562 the monastery was also dissolved. At that time, six former nuns were still alive, and their care was still secured.
