A towpath, sometimes also called a towpath, which runs alongside the river or canal bed, was an indispensable part of the transport infrastructure in the proverbial "good old days." Before ships could move by motor power, horses walked along the bank and pulled the boat against the current. This activity was called "treideln," and this is how the towpath got its name. As briefly mentioned at the beginning, in some areas the term "towpath" is more common for these paths, since the boat and horse were connected by a rope. Wherever these paths, located directly on the bank, have been preserved - regardless of their name - they are now popular with hikers and cyclists.

In 1906, the Teltow Canal opened after only six years of construction. It was intended to relieve the inner-city Spree River of heavy shipping traffic. A bridge was built over the canal for the Potsdam Main Railway. In April 1945, during the troop withdrawal at the end of World War II, the Teltow Canal Bridge was blown up by German troops and never rebuilt. The line is to be reactivated as part of the i2030 project and designed for speeds of up to 160 km/h. In the future, up to four hourly regional trains will run on the new line. Between Griebnitzsee and Potsdamer Platz, new tracks are being laid over a total length of 22 kilometers. A further 10.5 kilometers of track are being upgraded and electrified on the Berlin inner ring. A new station for regional transport is to be built here on Stahnsdorfer Damm, in the immediate vicinity of the Europarc Dreilinden industrial park.
