The Beelitz sanatorium is a testimony to German history, from the Wilhelminian era to the division of Germany...

The former hospitals consisted of four quadrants, each with separate female and male patients and non-infectious and infectious patients. Only one of the quadrants for female patients can be visited. The rest have been converted into condominiums. From 1945 to 1994, the clinic served the Red Army as a hospital. After that, it fell into disrepair before being converted into a treetop walk with a lost place. The tours are highly recommended.

The visit was unplanned for us, so we had no opportunity to take part in one of the guided tours… but it was still very interesting and the entrance fee is worth it

The Beelitz Heilstätten are a lost place near Berlin and a popular destination for the whole family. Over 100 years ago it was a lung sanatorium, but today it is a large adventure park with a treetop path, barefoot park, playgrounds, beer garden, snack stands and cafeterias. The 200-hectare park has its origins in the abandoned, dilapidated buildings of the former sanatorium and tuberculosis sanatorium Beelitz-Heilstätten.

As a sanatorium for patients with lung diseases, the Beelitz sanatoriums on the outskirts of Berlin were by far the largest facility of their kind before the First World War. Equipped with the most modern surgical and therapeutic facilities, the site quickly gained an excellent reputation. With the discovery of new treatment methods after the Second World War, the sanatoriums lost their importance. After being used as a Soviet military hospital, the reunification led to long periods of vacancy, some of which have continued to this day, and this led to vandalism and decay. However, for several years now, thanks to various entrepreneurial initiatives, new life has been emerging in Beelitz with a variety of uses.

In the lying-in halls, the tuberculosis patients could lie outside in the fresh air.
