This Marian shrine did not receive its name and patronage from one of the many people venerated as saints. Loreto is an internationally renowned Marian pilgrimage site in central Italy, in the Marche region. However, the town did not become famous because of apparitions of the Virgin Mary, as is the case with Lourdes (1858) in the French Pyrenees or Fatima (1917) in Portugal. The tradition of Marian devotion in Loreto dates back much further: since the end of the 13th century, a building considered to be the birthplace of Mary in Nazareth has been venerated there. According to legend, angels brought the so-called "Santa Casa" from Israel to Loreto, making several stops along the way. The original sanctuary of Loreto, which served as the model for the pilgrimage church near Augsburg shown here, can be found in the komoot system at the following link: + https://www.komoot.com/de-de/highlight/1580848

The Kobel Cross is a striking landmark on the 528 meter high Kobelberg in the Neusäß district of Westheim, near Augsburg. Erected in 1931, the 18 meter high metal cross rises on the edge of the Kobelwald and offers an impressive view of Augsburg. The inscription on the base reads: "To the honor of Christ, to the love of Mary - to the holy mountain as a sign." The Kobelberg is not only known for the cross, but also houses the pilgrimage church of St. Mary of Loreto, which is popularly known as the Kobel Church. This church was built in 1602 and developed into an important place of pilgrimage in the 17th and 18th centuries. For hiking enthusiasts, the area around the Kobel Cross offers numerous paths and circular tours that invite you to explore. The Kobel Cross and its surroundings are therefore not only spiritual attractions, but also popular destinations for nature lovers and hikers.

Christ Child Machine A particularly curious detail of the Kobel Church is the Christ Child Machine, which is located on the outside wall of the church. This machine shows the Christ Child and is considered the only one of its kind in Bavaria. When a coin is inserted, the image of the Christ Child lights up, accompanied by Christmas music - a popular attraction, especially during Advent. Construction history and extensions The church was founded around 1602 with the Loreto Chapel and extended over the course of the 17th and 18th centuries. Designed in the Baroque style, it also has Gothic elements that testify to its long construction history. The artistic ceiling frescoes and stucco work, which depict various scenes from the life of the Holy Family and Mary, are particularly worth seeing. Historical significance as a place of refuge During the Thirty Years' War, the church served as a place of refuge and offered people protection. Even later, during difficult times, the church was a place of hope and comfort for believers. This is reflected in the veneration that continues to this day. Nature and relaxation The Kobel Church is picturesquely situated on the Kobelberg and offers a great view of the Schmutter Valley and Augsburg. There are numerous hiking trails around the church through the Kobel Forest, which invite you to take a walk and relax. The cross and the paths around it also invite you to reflect and meditate. Interesting works of art and altars The interior of the church is rich in details. In addition to the Loreto Chapel, there are various side altars and valuable furnishings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Special works of art, such as the baroque high altar and figures from the Rococo period, are impressive testimonies to the craftsmanship of these eras.

The Kobelkirche Maria Loreto in Neusäß-Westheim is a fascinating example of baroque sacred architecture and is one of the oldest Loreto pilgrimage churches in southern Germany. In addition to its impressive architecture and historical significance as a place of pilgrimage, there are some special aspects and stories associated with the church. Legend of the "Holy House" of Loreto The Kobelkirche is modeled on the basilica in Loreto (Italy), which houses the "Holy House" of Nazareth, where Mary was born and grew up. According to legend, this house was brought to Loreto by angels from Nazareth in the 13th century, and replicas of the house have been built across Europe to provide pilgrims with a place of worship. The Loreto Chapel in the Kobelkirche symbolizes this "Holy House". The “Women’s Thirties” – A special pilgrimage period The pilgrimage period, known as the “Women’s Thirties”, begins on August 15th (Assumption of Mary) and lasts 30 days. During this time, numerous pilgrims visit the church to venerate Our Lady. Many believers seek prayer and silence here and come with the hope of healing and spiritual renewal.

Hainhofen Castle is located in the Hainhofen district of the town of Neusäß in the Augsburg district of Bavaria. The property consists of two main buildings: the baroque high castle, a four-story hipped roof building that was built in 1730, and the classicist long castle, which was built between 1760 and 1780 by the von Rehlingen family. The castle originally served as the seat of various patrician families, including the Fuggers and the von Rehlingens. Today it is privately owned and has been extensively restored. In 2013, the owners received the Swabia District Monument Prize for this exemplary renovation. The castle is picturesquely located on the western edge of the town in the Schmutter lowlands and is a protected architectural monument. Although it is not open to the public, it remains an important testimony to regional history and architectural development in Swabia. Near the castle is the Catholic parish church of St. Stephanus, which was built in 1718/19 by Johann Holzapfel. This church is also worth a visit and complements the historical ensemble of Hainhofen. For hikers and nature lovers, the area around the castle offers attractive routes that include the Schmuttertal and the Lohwald. A highlight is certainly the castle in Hainhofen, which was built in 1582 by Anton Fugger.
