A historic centre of horticulture, Waterperry Gardens is a beautiful spot just south of the village of the same name. There's a lovely cafe and a farm shop, as well as the Museum of Rural Life. The estate is free to mooch around, though you will need to purchase a ticket to view the formal gardens and dogs are not allowed in this area. Bernwood Forest is a magnificent woodland and a great place to enjoy butterflies in the warmer months — it even has dedicated trails for this very reason. Made up of Shabbington Wood and Waterperry Wood, it was once part of the Royal Hunting Forest of Bernwood, which has granted the trees here protection for over 700 years.
