After the First World War and the conclusion of the Treaty of St. Germain, the hut fell to the Italian side of the border and was subsequently used as a customs house. In the 1930s, it was incorporated into a military border area. After the Second World War, the hut remained in Italian possession, but from the 1970s onwards it was no longer used and gradually fell into disrepair.

An easily accessible and panoramic summit with a unique blend of nature, panorama, and history, it's ideal as an entry point to the Carnic High Route, for day trips with panoramic views, or even for a first alpine experience with cable car assistance.

The Austrian-Italian border on the Carnic High Route (also known as the Peace Trail or Via della Pace) runs for long stretches directly along the ridge that forms the state border between Austria and Italy – that is, between East Tyrol/Carinthia on the Austrian side and South Tyrol/Friuli-Venezia Giulia on the Italian side.

Anyone looking out over the Sexten Dolomites from the Carnic Ridge will experience one of the most impressive landscapes in the Eastern Alps. The contrast between the green alpine pastures along the high trail and the rugged rock faces of the Dolomites is striking – and that's precisely what makes this place so special: You're standing in the Carnic Alps and looking directly into the heart of the Dolomites.

The long climb is really worth it. Fantastic view. The Marchhütte was converted from a former bunker.
