The Helm mountain is located directly on the border between Austria (East Tyrol) and Italy (South Tyrol). On its summit, the ruins of the former Helmhütte (helm hut) are visible from afar. Numerous remnants of military installations from the mountain warfare of 1915 to 1918 can still be found in the surrounding area.

Next to the crumbling ruins of the old Helmhaus, where construction work is currently underway (as of August 2025), stands a simple yet powerful summit cross. The vertical beam appears to grow directly out of the pile of stones—as if it were a part of the mountain itself. A figure of Christ hangs from it, whose serene expression causes every passerby to pause. Its half-open eyes gaze toward the border between Italy and Austria—as if silently watching over the land.

A promising, easy to reach mountain and the first summit victory on the Carnic High Trail. Here you are perfectly attuned to the splendid panoramas of the next few days with a view of the Dolomites. In the vicinity of the summit there are also war ruins from the First World War, which showed its probably most grotesque side here in the form of an alpine war of position between Austria and Italy. This front line is also followed by the Carnic High Trail or the Via della Pace.

The Helm (Italian: Monte Elmo) is located near Vierschach in South Tyrol, on the border with East Tyrol. The mountain marks the western end of the main Carnic ridge.
On the 2,433 m high summit there are still the remains of the Helmhütte, which marks the end and beginning of the Carnic High Trail.
