From the free parking lot, the trail started off very well on a paved path. After about 800m-1km, the trail became unpaved and muddy, with trails along the river. On July 25, 1969, the DC-3 took off from Keflavík Airport bound for the runway at Sauðanes Farm, near Þórshöfn in northeast Iceland. While braking, the aircraft skidded to the right, colliding with a pile of lumber and suffering damage to the landing gear and wing. The four crew members were uninjured. Due to the high cost of repairs, it was decided to leave it in a field near the runway. For decades, the wreck served as a shelter for horses and sheep. In 2023, it was moved to the wreck of Sólheimasandur.
