Walbut Bridge carries the road from Melbourne to Allerthorpe, and Walbut Lock is immediately adjacent to the bridge.

The Pocklington Canal was constructed at the beginning of the 19th century to transport agricultural goods from the East Riding to the larger urban centres to the south and west. A Bill was placed before Parliament in 1814 and the canal was designed by George Leather Jnr, an experienced navigation engineer who worked on Goole Docks and the Knottingley and Goole Canal. The canal was opened in 1818, running for 9.5 miles from the River Derwent at East Cottingwith to a mile south of Pocklington. The cost was £32,695, which was actually less than the original estimate. Hagg Bridge is one of four bridges crossing the canal designed by George Leather.

Watch out for the Sun marker and then ride the trail towards Selby and spot all the planets along the way. Tried to educate you on how big/small they are and how far away from the sun. Interesting 👍

Nice and easy gravel track, can be quite bumpy and the middle section through woodlands always seems to be wet (even when it hasn't rained for weeks)

From here, you get a nice view of Hagg Bridge, a humpbacked crossing that spans the Pocklington Canal. The bridge looks so picturesque surrounded by the scenery of the Wolds. The fields are vibrant green, dotted with seasonal wildflowers and trees.

Can be a bit muddy in winter

Wonderful bit of wooded gravel track. Watch out for adders sunbathing in summer

The Longhorn Cattle spend Summer in the common and overwinter in Skipwith Village. They are very docile even if you walk between Mum and Her Calf usually more interested in the grass

Skipwith Common is an area of over 500 acres of lowland heath - one of the last remaining areas in the North of England. A nationally important nature reserve, it is managed by English Nature, principally because of insect and birdlife. The Common also contains ancient burial sites. Today we saw wild ponies and long horned cattle. Such a beautiful place to visit and spend some time there

This scale model of the Solar System is spread out along 6.4 miles of the old East Coast main-line railway. Along it you can find scale models of all the planets in our solar system as well as models of the Cassini and Voyager spacecraft

Nice cafe, six of us enjoyed lunch.

A narrow hump-backed bridge over the Pocklington Canal near Melbourne. It is currently closed to motor vehicles but remains open to cyclists and walkers. There is access to the canal towpath.

Nice place to stop and enjoy the trees, perhaps have picnic etc.

Great place to stop for a cuppa or a rest, roughly half way between Riccall and York.
