Lovely MTB/gravel route - when dry!

Maintained by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, Rifle Butts Quarry was created to provide stone for the construction of the railway line adjacent to the nature reserve. The site was then used as a rifle range from the 1890s to the First World War.

Car park 300m to the west if you don't want to walk all the way from Market Weighton. Steep chalk embankment with meadow underneath. Very scenic and I saw a small flock of jet black Hebridean sheep.

The slope is manageable but the valley thereafter can be boggy and turned over by cattle hoofs in winter

Market Weighton is a rural town with a bustling high street and plenty to offer the thirsty, hungry cyclist by way of cafes and pubs. William Bradley is Market Weighton's most famous resident. Although born in 1787 he remains Britain's tallest ever man at 7ft 9 inches tall and weighing 27 stone. There is a statue of Bradley in the town and his giant chair still sits in the Londesborough Arms.
