12월 30, 2025, Broekbos Natuurreservaat

It's a typical Voeren hillside forest with a mix of deciduous trees and humid zones, and together with the surrounding forests, it forms a valuable ecological whole. It is managed by the Agency for Nature and Forests.

Broekbos is a valuable nature reserve in the Belgian Voer region, known for its rich biodiversity and serene atmosphere. The woodland consists of moist lowlands of old deciduous trees and small streams that together form a natural ecosystem supporting rare plants and animal species. The reserve is a paradise for hikers, birdwatchers, and nature lovers seeking tranquility and an authentic experience of the Voer landscape. The presence of wet grasslands and marshy areas makes Broekbos an important refuge for amphibians, insects, and birds. The walking path through the forest winds past these natural features and offers varied views, from sunny open spaces to densely vegetated, shady areas. Historical features such as old hedgerows and field crosses recall the traditional use of the landscape by the local population.

This information board explains the nature and history of the Teuvenderberg. The area is known for its hilly landscape with old sunken roads, calcareous soil, and rich biodiversity. You'll find characteristic flora here, such as orchids and blackthorn hedges, and with a bit of luck, you might spot typical fauna like the yellowhammer or the little owl. The board also explains the history of this cultural landscape and the role of the Teuvenderberg as a transition zone between agriculture and nature. A beautiful place to pause and discover more about the area.

It's simply amazing what's been done here with the former mining site. I hadn't even heard of it until today, and I'm absolutely thrilled. ;-)

Text sign NL Welcome to TEUVENDERBERG This forest reserve is only part of a much larger bass complex between the Gulp valley and the plateau. The majority of the complex consists of private forest and extends across the language and national border. The forest reserve itself includes historical, indigenous deciduous forests. Except in a few specific zones, nature is allowed to take its course here and practically no management interventions are carried out anymore. You are here on the ridge in this large forest complex. If you follow the forest path down, you go through a so-called sunken road. This is a road that has been worn down by centuries of use on foot or with horse and cart. As a result, the road surface is now lower than the surrounding land. You will find them not only in forests, but also in the cultural landscape. In addition to their cultural-historical value, sunken roads also have an important natural value. Due to their sunken location, there is a microclimate in sunken roads. Specific animal and plant species are particularly happy there. In this way, shade plants such as ferns find shelter in the hollow path. Ferns do not produce real seeds, but reproduce by means of 'spores'.

Here, at the gallows, you are at the highest point in Helshoven. The artwork 'Helsh(ea)ven' by Frits Jeuris, known to most as the 'floating chapel', invites you to enjoy that landscape and the work itself. It is made from cherry tree wood. At the end of 2016, the 50-year-old high-stemmed trees in Helshoven had to be cut down due to a viral disease, Little Cherry, which causes tasteless cherries. The gallows represents death. Dead trees. And the dead person. And then there are the trees that are given a second life in the artwork, the floating chapel. An end, a beginning, a view, between heaven and Helshoven, inviting reflection, looking and of course what the work is best known for: that strange image of a chapel that seems to float.

You (almost) forget that you are actually standing on an old industrial site. After all, Hoge Kempen National Park is largely located where the Eisden mine was located. After the mine closed in 1987, it was decided to preserve the original buildings. Because the area was cleaned up after the mine closed in 1987 and nature was then allowed to take its course fairly freely, Terhills has become a home to various butterfly species and plants. The area includes two pitheads, three overgrown mine slag heaps, extensive ponds, marshy areas, creeks and woodland.

After mining ceased, nature was given free rein again. Terhills has four slag heaps, three of which are accessible. From their summits, you have an unforgettable view of the surrounding landscape of the Meuse valley and the Hoge Kempen National Park. The shortest route to the panorama of the long slag heap is signposted from the visitor reception. The slag heaps can also be climbed by bike, and mutual consideration for hikers must be shown on the narrow paths.
