I don't know whether this is the most beautiful view in Flanders, but it is certainly one of the most beautiful, on top of a pile of rubble from an industrial past that has left us in Limburg with many beautiful views.

You (almost) forget that you are actually standing on an old industrial site. After all, Hoge Kempen National Park is largely located where the Eisden mine was located. After the mine closed in 1987, it was decided to preserve the original buildings.
Because the area was cleaned up after the mine closed in 1987 and nature was then allowed to take its course fairly freely, Terhills has become a home to various butterfly species and plants. The area includes two pitheads, three overgrown mine slag heaps, extensive ponds, marshy areas, creeks and woodland.

The view of the Grote Plas in Maasmechelen offers an impressive panorama over the vast water, surrounded by green banks and reed beds. The mirrored lake is located in the middle of the Hoge Kempen National Park and attracts numerous water birds, which makes for a lively yet serene environment.
