A war memorial to reflect on. This beautiful chapel was erected in the heart of the community of Nieuwerkerken. Thanks to this simple chapel, the horrors of war will never be forgotten. The community of Nieuwerkerken thus demonstrates to passersby that they will never forget their victims. An information board on site provides further information: On the night of August 1, 1944, barely a month before liberation, ten people were arrested in Nieuwerkerken by the German secret police during a raid. Joseph Nijns was shot dead on the spot, and the nine others were taken to German camps. Eight of them died in Germany. This monument was erected for them and for Isidoor Bamps, who had been shot dead four months earlier during a resistance operation. The village was traumatized. After the war, all the residents gathered together to build a large memorial. St. Joseph's Chapel is idyllically situated in the middle of a country lane, along the Raasbeek stream, beneath a weeping willow. There's a bench and a swing attached to one of the weeping willow's branches. And, surprisingly, anyone who pays attention will also notice that this chapel has a house number 😃
