A beautiful example of a retention basin that comes into operation when the water level in the Zenne is too high. Then the water in the bend automatically overflows into this retention basin, which flows into the canal.

The Zenne (French: Senne) is a river in Belgium that rises at an altitude of 123 meters in the hamlet of Naar south of Zinnik and then flows through Brussels, where the river was vaulted. After 103 kilometers it flows into the Dijle at a height of 5 meters in Heffen at the so-called Zennegat (just north of Mechelen), together with the Leuven-Dijle Canal. The upper reaches (up to Halle) are cut into the Paleozoic subsurface. The Zenne is the longest river that flows only through the territory of Belgium

Be enchanted by the Gooze & Bozik collective. With a wall of no less than 2000 m2, it is one of the largest murals in Europe. The work is a fairy tale about a boy and a girl from Halle who take a nature walk every day on the way to school. They use the paper they find on the ground to make animals that really come to life. The beautiful wall painting was made in 2021 on the back of the Pacapime paper factory. The paper comes to life, so to speak. With this work they want to make residents and visitors aware of the Zenne and demonstrate that street art can have a breathtaking effect on a place.

“The Enchanted Forest” is an impressive mural in Halle. It is located on the wall of the corrugated cardboard producer Pacapime along the Brussels-Charleroi canal. With an area of no less than 2000 square meters, it is one of the largest murals in Europe. The artwork was created by the artist collective Treepack and tells the story of several children in an enchanted forest who find paper and cardboard among the waste with which they make origami animals. They dream of a better future in which people and nature live together in harmony. To their surprise, a magical spell brings the crafted animals to life. Children from the city of Halle served as models for the figures in the artwork.

Stunning wall mural A large fresco will cover, at the beginning of July, the facade of a cardboard producer located on the towpath between Lembeek and Halle (Flemish Brabant). With 2,000 square meters of surface, this mural will rank among the largest in Europe. Gooze who comes from Krasnodar and Bozik from Kazan are, indeed, two renowned names on the Russian street art scene, but also internationally. They are thus part of the Treepack collective, which was asked by the authorities of the small town of Flemish Brabant to create an extraordinary work intended to enhance the Senne valley. If the (imposed) argument of this fresco entitled "The Enchanted Forest" is somewhat corny with an obligatory touch of pedagogical ecology, its size, the quality of the design, inspired, in Bozik's case, by the techniques of the Australian aborigines , as well as the pictorial narrative sequence cut the breath of passers-by. The work will be called "The Enchanted Forest" and will tell the story of a boy and a girl from Hal who, walking along the Senne, see new rubbish every day. The young girl will use bits of waste to create birds and, the following days, more and more animals will appear while the shores will be much cleaner. The objective of the collective is to use this fresco to make people aware of the beauty of the neighborhood that borders this river and to show that street art has its place in the public space.

THE BIGGEST MURAL IN BELGIUM CAN BE FIND IN HALLE The back of the Pacapime building in Halle, a wall of no less than 2000 m2, received a new coat of paint in the form of a beautiful mural. Commissioned by the city of Halle, we created a monumental design for this gigantic building on the Zinderende Zenne. The theme and title of the artwork will be 'The Enchanted Forest'. 'The Enchantment' tells the story of a boy and girl from Halle. Every day they walk to school through the beautiful nature along the Zenne, but every day they see some new litter. One day the girl took a piece of paper and folded it into a little bird she saw drinking earlier on the banks. It wasn't long before the boy said, "I want to make that too!" The following days it suddenly became a lot cleaner on the waterfront, and there were suddenly many more animals. The mission of the artwork goes even further. The company wall and surroundings are being upgraded and it creates a green buffer by integrating plants, flowers and trees. It should make residents and visitors aware of the Senne, show that street art can represent a great aesthetic intervention in public space and seek a connection between and with the inhabitants of Halle. The artwork is part of the project of the city of Halle, called Zinderende Zenne, to improve, brighten up and give the Senne valley a unique image. The graffiti artwork on the 2,000 square meter wall by the corrugated board manufacturer Pacapime will become one of the biggest eye-catchers in the Zenne Park. The Zennepark strives for a nice cohesion across the municipal boundaries between existing and planned projects in the project area. The aim is to develop an elongated park with the Zenne as a structuring, blue-green carrier, which should provide a new Halse identity and which can contribute to the upgrading of the quality of life in the city. The current lock of Lembeek was inaugurated in 1933 and is therefore more than 80 years old. This lock was originally designed for the passage of ships of 600 tons. The lock was fitted with a central door, which turned out to be a smart move many years later. The lock used to consist of two lock chambers. Depending on the busyness of shipping, the lock master could decide whether to use the small or the large lock chamber. When only one boat was available, only the small lock chamber was used. If two 600-ton ships were sailing in succession, the central doors were opened and the large chamber was used. In this way the lock master was able to save a lot of water. Because the ships became longer and longer over time, the central doors were removed in the 1970s and from then on the large chamber was always used for the ships' axes. The lock was adapted with every technological advancement. Today, the four locks on the canal (Lembeek, Halle, Lot and Ruisbroek) are fully operated from the control center in Lembeek. And yet adjustments to an existing infrastructure are not endless. After 80 years we have reached a turning point. The current lock requires major annual maintenance. In addition, the limited length of the lock forms an obstacle to the use of longer ships. The construction of a new lock is therefore urgent.
