This is not the Saint Maurice Church in Nevele but the Saint Radegundis Church in Merendree. The Saint Radegundis Church is originally a Romanesque single-nave church and one of the oldest churches in the region. The octagonal crossing tower is from the 12th century and was preserved together with the transept. The church suffered greatly from the religious troubles in the 16th century (iconoclasm) and had to be partly demolished. It obtained its current appearance during its extension in 1881-1882. The brick used contrasts with the blue Tournai stone of the tower, the 16th century nave and the transept. In 1944 the church was protected as a monument. NEVELE Saint Maurice Church The oldest parts of the church, various walls in fieldstone and Tournai stone, can be found in the choir and transept. They probably date back to the 12th - 13th century. The square tower would date from the 13th - 15th century. The municipality of Niviala was already mentioned in the 9th century. Nevele became one of the most important lordships of Flanders.
