The Kaaihoeve is located in an 18th-century farmhouse that originally served as a transshipment point on an old Scheldt branch. Coal and lime were transported here via the Scheldt from Tournai.

The Dender is the fourth largest river in Belgium (after the Scheldt, the Meuse and the Yser) and flows from Ath to Dendermonde over 65 km. Upstream of Aalst the Dender is navigable for ships up to 300 tons, but the river is currently mainly used for recreation. The river crosses the following cities: Ath, Lessen, Geraardsbergen, Ninove, Aalst and Dendermonde.

The Kaaihoeve is a former farm built in the 18th century. It was purchased by the province of East Flanders and now houses the Provincial Nature Education Centre.
