The unpaved intersection near Smetlede is located in the middle of the quiet Flemish countryside, surrounded by winding country roads, fields and green hedges. This intersection marks the start of several charming routes, where you can cycle over sand and gravel paths through a typical agricultural landscape.

Statue by sculptor (and former mayor of Erpe-Mere) Herman De Somer (1923-2008), who died two months after the statue was placed. "De sopeters" was the nickname of the people of Vlekkem. Sop was soaked bread, poured over with milk and brought to the farmers in the field by children or farmers' wives. Source: Wikipedia

The site of this statue, the Balei, is the highest point in Sint-Lievenshoutem (83m above sea level). The statue refers to the 'Ouden Heirweg' (Old Heir Road), the Roman road between Boulogne, Asse, and Tongeren, which ran past here. From 1596 onwards, the local gallows stood on the Balei. The name of the slope therefore comes from Banlo, which means 'forest for justice'. Sources: Information board on site Wikipedia
