Nattenhaasdonk's location, near the Rupel and Scheldt rivers and along the only road to the Rupelmonde ferry, was of great strategic importance. This may have been the reason for the development of the Hof (court) and its surrounding residential area. Later, the Hof became a tenant farm. The buildings were eventually largely demolished and the ramparts filled in. The church, rectory, and cemetery also disappeared. Only a small chapel remains of the site where the church stood for centuries. A severe and prolonged flood in 1825, one of many to hit Nattenhaasdonk, decided its fate, and a new church was forced to be built higher up in Wintam.

The neo-Gothic chapel is a brick building with natural stone, on a rectangular plan under a slate tent roof. The chapel has a lower, five-sided, projecting choir and is preceded by an entrance portal with a pointed gable. The wall openings are pointed arch-shaped. The facades are also characterized by diagonal, two-part buttresses and a mouse-tooth frieze. The choir has a brick frieze in a decorative pattern. The interior has brick walls and a wooden dome vault. (Inventory of Immovable Heritage)

Around the castle lies a domain that, together with the Hingenebroekpolder and Schellandpolder, once measured around 300 hectares. The park around the castle is around 40 hectares and is connected to the polders that are part of the Bornem silence area via the Notelaerdreef. In the park you will find yourself in an oasis of peace. The domain is open to the public and is eagerly visited by walkers and joggers. (RouteYou)

Armenpoort

The pastor of the parish church of Nattenhaasdonk, Willem Huveneers, played an active role in the Boerenwar in 1798. After a flood in 1825, the church and parsonage were demolished and moved to Wintam higher up. In the 19th century, a new chapel and a Boerwarmonument were erected on this site, together with the name 'Pastoor-Huveneersheuvel' they refer to this historical event.
