There isn't much left of the abbey now but the place is really very beautiful.

The Abbey of San Michele alla Verruca, a place steeped in history and spirituality, offers breathtaking views and an atmosphere of deep reflection. Despite its state of abandonment, the Romanesque remains tell stories of friars and medieval battles. Surrounded by paths that connect Vicopisano, Calci, and Montemagno, the monastery is an ideal starting point for explorations and adventures, enriched by legends such as that of the Sasso dell'Addolorata.

The castle on the mountain overlooks the city of Caprona and the tower stands out at the top. The town of Caprona suffered an attack by the army of the Tuscan Guelph League, which included the young soldier Dante Alighieri. Dante mentions the place in the XXI Canto of the Inferno: “Thus I saw I already feared the infantry who issued under treaty from Caprona, seeing himself among constant enemies.”
