Originally, the Fosso del Mulino connected Pisa to San Giuliano Terme , having been dug in the 10th century by merging the waters of the nearby Ozzeri Canal (a remaining stretch of the Auser River ) to easily transport marble from the various quarries of Monte Pisano to Pisa for the construction of various buildings, including those in Piazza del Duomo and the Walls of Pisa . The stones, via Porto Pisano , were also exported throughout Italy. It was thanks to Duke Cosimo I that in 1568 the works began on the project by Lorenzo degli Albizzi for the extension of the canal towards Ripafratta. The new route consisted of capturing the waters of the Serchio near Ripafratta and continuing in a tunnel under the town where there were docks and various mills with access from the basements of the houses. The tunnel is still present and the eighteenth-century Grassotti mill in Ripafratta, even if converted into a commercial activity, still has underground access to the Fosso. It was from then that the canal took on its current toponym as along its route it powered various mills used for grinding grain and pressing olives
