Forca di Cerro pass

The Forca di Ancarano arriving from Preci is the pleasant end of a 12 km climb with 470 m of altitude difference... from there it's all downhill to Norcia

I would like to suggest that when travelling through the Valnerina about ten kilometres after Borgo Cerreto, take a detour on the right marked PIEDIPATERNO. This will avoid travelling along the rather busy provincial road and still arrive in Spoleto, passing through the Forca di Ferro (it is a climb with a gradient of approximately 4/6%, 10km long with a difference in altitude of approximately 400 metres…ZERO TRAFFIC, good surface.

The Ancarano fork is located at an altitude of 1,008 meters above sea level, connecting the Santa Scolastica plain and the Campiano valley. It actually hides a historical gem: the remains of a sanctuary from the pre-Christian era (4th century BC). These are not visible from the road, but can be easily reached by following the signs.

Spoleto and the Valnerina are connected by the beautiful cycle-pedestrian path of the old railway, however not suitable for road bikes. The alternative is therefore the state road through Forca di Cerro, a winding road surrounded by nature and with very little traffic. The pass is 733 meters high.

Spoleto is an ancient and artistic city in Umbria, rich in Roman, medieval and Renaissance remains. It was a Roman colony, Lombard capital and today it is also a point of reference for Umbrian cycling thanks to the Spoleto-Assisi and Spoleto-Norcia itineraries.

Norcia is located on the Santa Scolastica plateau, and is known for its gastronomic tradition based on pork butchery products, such as ham, sausage and truffles. It has been hit by various earthquakes throughout its history: the last one, in 2016, caused serious damage to its artistic and cultural heritage.
