Stunning panorama (Zita Pass)

Nestled between the woods and the Grappuda and Caruso mountains, Palizzi is a small village located along the river of the same name. Palizzi is located under the ruins of the imposing castle, symbol of the village. Edward Lear wrote, “No place wilder nor more extraordinary than Palizzi can attract the eye of an artist.”

The step of the Zita or "the step of the fiancée" tells a sad story from the Middle Ages of the death of a girl named Caterina. The story tells of a girl who kills herself because she doesn't want to marry the man chosen for her. Legend says that she was in love with someone else.

The Church of San Leo, in Africo Vecchio, is a jewel of Byzantine origin. Distinguished by its simple architecture and a marble statue from 1635, it was restored after the flood of '51 and has become a pilgrimage destination since 1972.
