Perfect for a mid-November visit, as I did today. The lake is frozen and magnificent to see. It's a short drive from San Giuseppe—it took me an hour and a quarter—but there's ice in some spots, and it's quite cold, being on the dark side. But it's worth it.

Lake Pirola is a picturesque artificial lake accessible from the Gerli-Porro Refuge along a trail that crosses scree slopes and stretches where the trail merges with the rocks (markings are present but not always visible; be careful). The lake is surrounded by Alpine scenery and can be skirted along a scenic trail.

A charming alpine lake with turquoise waters, nestled in a valley surrounded by hills, with a beautiful view all around. It can be reached from San Giuseppe (1h30min from signs) and from other itineraries in Valmalenco. The path from San Giuseppe has some steep and wet sections, especially during the thaw: comfortable footwear suitable for the terrain is recommended.

Above Val Ventina, in the upper Val Malenco, Lake Pirola seems almost hidden among screes and small cliffs. Surrounded by some peaks of about 2,400 meters above sea level, this small wedge-shaped body of water is not far from the Tartaglione Crispo refuge.

The route from San Giuseppe takes about 1 hour, the path is not difficult but rather steep and wet given its exposure.
