The building was constructed in the thirteenth century outside the ancient Roman city and, together with the Church of Sant'Agata, formed the core of the new urban expansion in the Middle Ages, desired by the "bourgeois" faction, as opposed to the "notables," who centered their power in the Piazza del Comune. The new palace served as the meeting place for the "Società del Popolo," where the Populists elected their consuls and conducted their business. Inspired by the architecture of the Palazzo Comunale, it stands in the square with a two-story façade: the lower story consists of a portico with Gothic arches, while the upper story is constructed of brick and crowned with crenellations, and four triple lancet windows illuminate a single large room. In 1410, the building became the seat of the University, or Paratico dei mercanti dell'arte del Pignolato (Guild of Merchants of the Arts of Pignolato). https://www.turismocremona.it/en/palazzo-cittanova

Very nice square to visit, full of history and services in the area

This oversized bench was the first Big Bench installed along the Po River, inaugurated in 2021 within the Po and Morbasco Park. Painted in red and gray, it harks back to Cremona tradition. Approximately two meters high and four meters wide, it invites you to stop for a unique break, take a photo, or simply observe the great river from a different perspective. A rubber mat at the base makes the space safe and playful for both adults and children. Not far from the bench is a fresh water fountain for refilling water bottles during your break.
