The hydraulic junction of the Tombe Morte-Tredici Ponti constitutes the most important concentration of artificial waterways in the province of Cremona, irrigating approximately 85,000 hectares of countryside. Here the Naviglio Civico di Cremona, the Naviglio Grande Pallavicino and the Canale Vacchelli intersect, the latter pouring almost all of its flow into the Naviglio Pallavicino, the Naviglio Civico and a dozen irrigation ditches through an impressive system of locks. Finally, a spillway, built between 1968 and 1981, detaches from the junction, which discharges any excess flow from the Naviglio Civico, the Naviglio Pallavicino and the Vacchelli into the Oglio river. Two different hypotheses have been made regarding the origin of the name, the first would originate from the term tomba which is synonymous with siphon, a hydraulic element that connects two conduits. Probably some of these artifacts would have fallen into disuse, hence the adjective death. Another hypothesis is linked to the discovery of several dozen burials dating back to the late Roman era.

The Pietro Vacchelli canal is an important hydraulic work from the late 1800s built by the Consorzio Irrigazioni Cremonesi to irrigate 80 thousand hectares of the Cremona countryside in the stretch between the Adda River and the Tombe Morte locality in Genivolta.

Stunning basilica located on the outskirts of Crema which stands out from afar with its unmistakable domes. As impressive as it is from the outside, the interior is very contained but charming nonetheless. Leave your bicycle in the square in front, where you will find a bar and some gates to tie it to, and don't miss the opportunity to visit it!

The Pietro Vacchelli canal, formerly Canale Marzano from the locality where the water intake from the Adda river is located, flows from west to east in the Middle Lombardy Plain and constitutes the largest hydraulic work for irrigation in the territory of the province of Cremona. Built by the Cremonesi Irrigazioni Consortium between 1887 and 1892, on the proposal of the engineer. Pietro Vacchelli (whose name he took after his death in 1913), with the aim of resolving the serious agricultural crisis of the second half of the 19th century caused by backward cultivation systems. It, in an almost exclusively straight path, transports 38.5 cubic meters of water per second up to the locality "Tombe Morte", in the Municipality of Genivolta, where its waters join those derived from the Oglio river.

Crema - Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Croce The Lodi architect Giovanni Battagio, a pupil of Bramante, who trained in the very modern Milanese school, was called in to design the sanctuary. Around 1500 Battagio broke off relations with the blacksmiths and the continuation of the factory was entrusted to Giovanni Montanaro. In 1514 Crema was under siege by the coalition composed of the Duchy of Milan, the Spanish Empire and the Swiss Confederation: its defense was entrusted to Renzo da Ceri who had everything around the city leveled except for the sanctuary in an advanced state of ruin. construction transforming it into a fort. Renzo da Ceri won thanks to the attack on the Sforza camp in Ombriano, but the four-month siege was not favorable to the sanctuary which was seriously damaged. The events of the war and the plague epidemic following the siege slowed down the continuation of the works: the first internal decorations began around 1541. In 1585 the sanctuary was entrusted to the parish of Pianengo. In the year 1593 the Venetian mayor Nicola Vendramin had a new road connecting Porta Serio and the sanctuary built: it was long known as Strada Vendramina and was further widened and tree-lined in 1810. On 14 November 1664, the Doge of Venice Domenico Contarini authorized the establishment of a fair to be held every year on 25 March, the day of the Annunciation: the first edition was held in 1666 and is still held today. In 1694 the sanctuary was entrusted to the order of the Discalced Carmelites who a few years later (1706) began the construction of the imposing convent. In 1710 they also added the bell tower. However, the Carmelites did not remain there for long: in 1810 they had to abandon Crema following the Napoleonic suppressions. Once the friars had left, the problem arose of entrusting the care of souls to the neighborhood that had arisen in the meantime around the sanctuary: in 1828 the bishop of Crema, Monsignor Tommaso Ronna, decreed the establishment of the parish of Santa Maria della Croce: the first priest was Don Agostino Cremonesi who took possession of the parish on 2 May 1830.

The Rocca Sforzesca of Soncino (Cr) is one of the most typical fortresses linked to the schemes of the Visconti castle of the Po valley. It was built between 1473 and 1475. In excellent state of maintenance. Often place of festivals, costume and theme parties. The interior is also beautiful. To visit absolutely

I report, for information purposes, what little I read to contextualize my visit and try to explain such a concentration of water and water exchanges. (from Wikipedia) "[...] The Dead Tombs (also known as Le Formose) are an important hydraulic node located in the municipal area of Genivolta, in the central-northern sector of the province of Cremona. In a space of a few hundred square meters, three waterways of a certain importance intersect (Naviglio Civico di Cremona, Naviglio Grande Pallavicino and Canale Vacchelli). While the two canals do not exchange their waters except to a minimal extent, the Vacchelli Canal pours almost all of its flow into the Naviglio Pallavicino, the Naviglio Civico and a dozen smaller canals, via a notable system of locks. Finally, a drainage vessel, built between 1968 and 1981, detaches from the node, which discharges any excess flow of the Naviglio Civico, the Naviglio Pallavicino and the Vacchelli into Oglio. The reason why so many important watercourses meet precisely in this place is to be found in the morphological characteristics of this strip of the Po Valley. The Crema area is crossed by a relict river valley, called the Morbasco valley or Navigli valley. This valley has its head in the strip of territory between Romanengo and Soncino and can be precisely identified up to a few kilometers south of Soresina. This depression, whose bottom is located about ten meters lower than the fundamental level of the plain, was in ancient times the natural location of a still existing watercourse, the Morbasco, and currently hosts the riverbeds of the Naviglio Civico di Cremona and the Naviglio Grande Pallavicino. At the Dead Tombs there is a narrowing of this valley, which forces the waterways to come closer and then meet, and then separate again as the furrow widens again [...]"
